reEcho is a participatory computer interface that takes frequency and loudness attributes of the user’s voice to call up graphic and image contents on the screen.
Its made-up visual contents, based on the Greek myth Echo Nymph and Narcissus (Ovid version found in Metamorphose III), are juxtaposed with transparency effect presenting a non-linear version of this well-known story. The mirror effect is used to not only imply the plot, but also reflect our relationship with machines; the medium we choose and ways we respond to or control it.
Projecting the display on a wall-sized screen with a microphone and mic stand, each user is offered the role of a story-teller exploring both the fragments of the myth itself and his/her own voice’s qualities. In front of other viewers, this act can be seen as a performance; it challenges the user to recreate distinctive displays for his/her own pleasure and at the same time performing in front of others.
